(*) New rule (introduced at ECF GA, 21/4/2012) for under 10s age class:
Assessment for dogs teamed with children (under 10s age class)
To avoid unsuitable dogs being teamed with children, competitors must demonstrate they can handle their dog alone (without adult assistance). An adult will still be required to accompany a child competing in the under 10 age class during the race, attached via a double line as per existing rules.
The proceedure to assess this will be as follows:
- Child to enter via their country's Federation (as normal).
- On Friday (before vet check) a time will be set for all under 10s to be assessed. The child (with race bib, and passport/photo ID), and dog (with microchip) and running kit for both must be available – all will be checked against the race entry. If you cannot make this you will be able to make an appointment on the Saturday morning (by prior arrangement).
- A controlled, safe course will be set. We suggest no longer than 100m out around a cone and back; on an open, grassy surface with no obsticals or trees to collide with.
- Each child will be asked to run the course individually and be assessed by the Race Technical Committee. The Race Technical Committee is made up of 4 people from 4 separate countries drawn from a hat at the ECF GA at the European Championships – lead by the Head of the ECF Technical Committee.
- Once you pass the assessment, you will be able to proceed to the vet check. You must pass this assessment before the vet check.
If your dog is deemed unsuitable, the Race TC will give you the following options:
- To change your dog and be re-assessed.
- If the case is borderline (and you do not have the option of another dog) you may be allowed to race with the dog in question but your name will be flagged as a potential problem. If this develops into a related issue during the actual race, you will be disqualified automatically without the option for appeal.
- In extreme cases the Race TC have the power to refuse your entry.
This rule has been introduced to safeguard children and other competitors. It will also avoid problems for the Race TC post race when judgement and emotions between parents and children competing can become confused.
