Laser Biathlon GB – focus on fitness
Biathlon is regarded as one of the most physical and mentally demanding sports. Competitors move from a high cardiovascular activity (cross-county skiing, cross-country running or roller skiing) to target shooting — the complete opposite, an environment requiring focus, concentration and a calm controlled heart rate.
Laser Biathlon events use laser rifles (as used in the famous Biathlon Races in the Schalke Stadium in Germany) – CLICK HERE for review of our laser rifles by Holly Rees-Lay. Laser rifles are provided, included in your entry fee. The rifles do not use bullets, they fire a laser pulse which triggers the target. Laser rifles are 100% safe; approved by Police, you do not need firearms training or a licence; they are less powerful than lasers used every day in barcode scanners at supermarket checkouts. The rifles look, feel and operate exactly as a biathlon rifle. They do not create a bang when fired and there is no recoil. Training/practice with rifles is provided prior to the race if required.
You may use your own biathlon rifle if fitted with an approved laser barrel – please contact us for specifications. You will also have to follow basic procedures when at the venue and when carrying your boxed rifle to the target range. You will not be able to run with the rifle on your back, it must remain in the target range (which will be supervised at all times).
The physical side of the event is covered by cross-country running or roller skiing as promoted by Pippa Middleton. These are located in stunning traffic free forest/ parkland venues or tracks.
All ages (11+) can take part with the race divided into age classes. All fitness levels and abilities are welcome – adults may also choose to run the shorter juniors course if they feel 3 loops of the long course is too far (consult your doctor if new to exercise or starting fitness regime).
Events will be posted on the calendar HERE. Follow us on twitter for updates.
The race
- A +/–3km course is marked (+/–1km course for juniors and option for adults).
- You run the same course 3 times.
- You visit the target range on the first 2 laps, on the last lap you cross the finish line.
- Shooting position will depend on your ability:
- prone (lying down) – easiest (both laps for juniors and adult short course).
- standing – more difficult.
- one of each of the above (adults long course).
- If you miss a target, you run a small 'penalty' loop for each target missed.
- Team events are also planned (3 per team, with each team member visiting the target range).
